BEVERLY, MA – Hot dog fans with discretionary taste buds are in luck. New England Hot Dog Company, a hot dog franchise company founded in 2005 on the idea of uniting hot dog lovers, has identified 6 counties in Eastern Pennsylvania as markets for new franchise development. The counties of Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware and Chester are open for new eateries. And the search is on for a franchisee with passion, a strong work ethic, and a love for America’s favorite food.

“Remember that feeling of biting into your first hot dog?” asks New England Hot Dog CEO Richard Saxe. “The taste of the meat, the crunch of the condiments, and the softness of the roll … that’s what we’re all about. We’re a burger’s worst nightmare.”

The hot dog franchise, which started on the North Shore of Massachusetts, has expanded into shopping plazas, downtowns, and Main Streets across the Northeast during the last five years—regardless of the uncertainty on Wall Street. Six stores are now open along the East Coast, with five in dog-crazy New Jersey.

“We’re always looking for new opportunities,” Saxe says. “The burger business has become saturated for both consumers and franchises and we’re providing an alternative.”

Saxe and his company provide everything a franchisee needs to get a new restaurant off the ground. Along with a growing brand and a solid, proven business system, the ownership team provides training in all operations and procedures. New franchisees also benefit from guidance in sales, marketing, and community outreach. Ben Bard, owner at the newly opened Cinnaminson, NJ, location, has nothing but high praise for the New England Hot Dog Company family.

“I spoke with Rich on a daily basis from Day 1,” Bard says. “If we didn’t have that kind of communication, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today. It’s a tremendous selling point of the company.”

It’s that kind of support that makes the decision to get into business with Saxe and his company so easy.

“Franchising with New England Hot Dog significantly reduces the learning curve of opening a restaurant,” Bard adds. “It’s almost turn-key.”

Each New England Hot Dog franchise location, known for gourmet “haute” dogs, uses top-tier Boar’s Head products, New England-style rolls, and a collection of high-quality side dishes. They also offer a huge selection of specialty toppings, including sauerkraut, beans, bacon, jalapeno, guacamole, roasted peppers, cheddar cheese, buffalo sauce and assorted mustards. Outside of the edible delights, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs—featuring news, sports, and children’s shows—and The Dog Pound—a small area where kids can play—provide family-friendly entertainment to the restaurants that seat about 24 people.

A potential franchisee doesn’t necessarily need experience in the restaurant industry to be successful, Saxe says. Passion and a willingness to work hard and become active in the community are valued above past experience. The typical total investment to open a New England Hot Dog Franchise runs between $125,000 and $200,000.

“We’re looking for dedicated individuals that have a passion for delicious food and good customer service,” says Saxe. “And we promise you’ll never look at burgers the same way again.”

BEVERLY, MA – Hungry customers have been peering through the windows and knocking on the doors at the newest New England Hot Dog Company location in Cinnaminson, NJ, for the last six weeks.

“We’ve had to turn the customers away,” says franchisee Ben Bard. “They were in here trying to eat before we had tables and chairs. But now we’re ready to go. We’re ready to start serving some hot dogs.”

The wait is over, as the store will officially open at the beginning of March. Located off accessible Route 130, and a quick 15-minute drive from Philadelphia, it will be the fifth location in the blossoming New England Hot Dog franchise and the fourth in the Garden State. Freehold, Sewell, and Atlantic City are the other New Jersey sites. Anticipation for this newest hot dog location—from the customers and from the store manager—is through the roof.

“Oh, we’re very excited. We’ve got advertisements on the local radio and we’re ready to go,” Bard says. “Customers have been trying to get in the doors since January. And they all say that, with this location, we’re going to do great. It’s very encouraging.”

After the ribbon is cut at the grand opening, Bard and his staff will begin cutting into the delicious New England-style rolls and dishing out some scrumptious dogs. Several promotions, including some free hot dog giveaways, are planned soon after the opening to thank the local patrons for their interest and support, Bard says.

“The township has been very welcoming as we’ve prepared to open,” he adds.

And so has New England Hot Dog Company CEO Richard Saxe. Saxe has been the backbone in building the brand since its creation in 2005 and has been very supportive of Bard as he readies to open the Cinnaminson doors.

“I’ve Spoken with Rich on a daily basis since Day 1,” Bard says. “If we didn’t have that kind of communication, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today. It’s a tremendous selling point of this company.”

Saxe, who has plans to open several more locations along the East Coast in the next year, is thrilled with the potential for the new location.

“The possibilities are limitless in Cinnaminson,” he said. “It’s a great location and I’m thrilled about how it’s all turned out so far. I have no doubt the new store will continue the proud quality and tradition of New England Hot Dog.”

Each New England Hot Dog location, known for gourmet “haute” dogs, uses top-tier Boar’s Head products and New England-style rolls. They also offer myriad toppings, including sauerkraut, beans, bacon, jalapeno, guacamole, roasted peppers, cheddar cheese, Buffalo sauce and a collection of mustards. Outside of the edible delights, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs—featuring news, sports, and children’s shows—and The Dog Pound—a small area where kids can play—provide entertainment and a family-friendly touch to the 1,500 square-foot restaurants that seat about 40 people.

Far more people are expected to pass through the doors this weekend, anxious to finally get a taste of a New England Hot Dog from Cinnaminson.

“We can’t wait,” Bard says. “We’re very excited.”

BEVERLY, MA – Ben Bard and his family have been taking weekly trips to the New England Hot Dog restaurant in Sewell, NJ, for quite some time. “My family is nuts about it,” he says.

Come this holiday season, the trips will be much shorter, as Bard is going to be running the newest New England Hot Dog location in Cinnaminson, NJ. The store will be the sixth in the growing franchise and the fifth in the Garden State. Bard, who at 37 is a seasoned businessman, is thrilled about the possibilities.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to get into something that’s growing,” he says. “I’m very excited to be part of the New England Hot Dog family.”

New England Hot Dog president Richard Saxe and his management team feel they are setting up a new location that has the potential to be one of the franchise anchors for years to come. Located off accessible Route 130 and about 15 minutes from Philadelphia, the store will reap the benefits from being part of a shopping center with many recognizable brands.

“I think it’s our best location so far,” Saxe says. “It’s a huge shopping center and it has all the right things going for it—parking, easy in-and-out access, office parks in the area. We’re going to have great visibility.”

They’re also going to have some well-known neighbors, as the new restaurant will be adjacent to a Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Both Saxe and Bard feel that having such a recognizable brand next door can only mean good things for business.

“I think the impact will be tremendous,” Bard says. “It’s a great 1-2 punch. You can’t have a better backyard picnic than Five Guys and New England Hot Dog.”

The outstanding location was just one of the many features that drew Bard to New England Hot Dog. He put in countless hours during years of Internet research to try to find the perfect brand.

“I liked the direct contact with the CEO and I feel good about becoming part of an upstart franchise,” Bard says. “And the hot dog itself? Well, it’s incredible.”

Hungry customers in the Cinnaminson area can expect to see the doors of the unique restaurant open sometime in late November or early December. Saxe and Bard plan to become a fixture in the local media and at community events right away—and hope that booming business is the result.

“I can’t think of another hot dog specialty restaurant in the area,” Bard says. “There are hamburger joints on every corner, but nothing for the hot dog lovers. We’ll be new, fresh, and exactly what people need.”

BEVERLY, MA – The gourmet “haute” dogs are sizzling and the customers are lining up on Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City, NJ, for a taste of New England Hot Dog. Opened the first week of July, the newest location in the growing franchise is off to a great start, offering delicious food at an affordable price—a welcome sight in the struggling economy.

“We give you a place where you can feed your family for $25 or $30,” says Richard Saxe, president of New England Hot Dog. “We’re definitely seeing some really good traffic so far and we’ve implemented a lot of new ideas.”

Along with franchisee Sam Reale, Saxe is unveiling some creative marketing and some great deals to get sales cooking. The new store is aggressively marketing the brand with discount coupons to attract out-of-towners attending conventions, advertisements on local talk radio, and a new billboard on Route 30 that will highlight the campaign. Promotions such as “Dollar Dog” nights and $5 footlong meals are attracting the attention of locals and visitors.

“It’s all about building the brand down here,” says Saxe.

The brand has grown in leaps and bounds since its creation four years ago. The scrumptious “haute” dogs—made using Boar’s Head products and New England-style rolls—and distinctive, creative toppings are available in two other locations in the state: Freehold and Sewell. The company also serves hungry customers in Taunton, MA, and is in the final stages of lease negotiations with four other franchisees. New restaurants are expected soon in southern New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.

Hopes are high for the future in Atlantic City, too. Along with the store, Saxe is waiting for a complimentary trailer to open close by. He expects it to happen any day and anticipates greater exposure for the main store right away. And he hopes the momentum will carry through long after the dog days of summer come to a close.

“I think because of where we’re located, The Walk, the high-end retail section, it’ll be a very good time for us during the fall and the holidays,” says Saxe.

BEVERLY, MA – The New England Hot Dog Company, famous for its gourmet “haute” dogs and unique, creative toppings, will be opening four sets of doors in Atlantic City, NJ, this May. A restaurant, a kiosk, a cart and a trailer will join forces to serve up a wealth of convenient and appetizing choices for tourists and locals on The Walk, the area’s premier shopping outlet.

“To land a deal in Atlantic City is very exciting,” says Richard Saxe, president of New England Hot Dog Company. “It’s a break we’ve been waiting for and it’s a major step for the company.”

Saxe and his management team, which includes his brother, Steve, chose Sam Reale to manage the new sites. Reale, a former restaurant owner/entertainer in the area, will team up with his 21-year-old daughter, Alexa. The duo will also oversee two or three ice cream carts on The Walk—all under the New England Hot Dog Company name.

“I liked the idea and how they do things,” Reale says of the company. “I think it’s a golden opportunity for the area.”

The Atlantic City sites join Freehold and Sewell as places to enjoy delicious New England dogs in the Garden State. Launched four years ago, the company also has locations in Taunton and Plymouth—both in Massachusetts—and is currently eyeing expansion opportunities in Miami-Dade Country, FL, Manchester, NH, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Each location boasts one exclusive local dog, and all use top-tier Boar’s Head products and New England-style rolls. All sites also offer myriad toppings, including sauerkraut, beans, bacon, jalapeno, guacamole, roasted peppers, cheddar cheese, Buffalo sauce and a collection of mustards. Outside of the edible delights, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs—featuring news, sports, and children’s shows—and The Dog Pound—a small area where kids can play—provide entertainment and a family-friendly touch to the 1,500 square-foot restaurants that seat about 25 people.

“In these times, we give people the chance to go out and feed a family of four or five for $25,” says Saxe.

If there’s anything Eddie Andelman is more passionate about than sports, it’s hot dogs. It’s been estimated the 70-year-old talk radio legend and founder of the annual Hot Dog Safari, a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis, has downed 25,000 franks—“probably more,” he says. At first we were skeptical, but then he took us to his secret spots, where we learned: 1) Andelman has an unnatural ability to store food, and 2) like Chicago, Boston is a great hot dog town.

1. Simco’s

A legendary operation founded in 1910, and a favorite of cops and municipal workers. Standing room only.

The Dog: A nicely buttered roll cradles this slender, grilled all-beef frankfurter. The bar staff piles on any requested condiments.

Eddie says: “This is my idea of a great place to eat. Who the hell eats at the Ritz? Only the Mayflower people.”

Eddie could eat: Two doubles (double dog, single roll), with relish.

$2.55, 1509 Blue Hill Ave., Mattapan, 617-296-3800.

2. Eire Pub

A classic Irish pub established in 1962, with a horseshoe bar and plenty of Sox memorabilia. Ronald Reagan came here during a presidential campaign swing.

The dog: A steamed Kayem on a steamed bun, with toppings added by the bartender.

Eddie says: “Though it’s steamed, it doesn’t lose its flavor, which is rare.”

Eddie could eat: Six, plain. “But I gotta watch the Sox while I’m doing it.”

$1.79, 5 Adams St., Dorchester, 617-436-0088.

3. Fuddruckers

Like Chuck E. Cheese’s, without the oversize rat—and known for burgers instead of pizza.

The dog: A grilled quarter-pound Pearl split down the middle and served on a roll made in-house every day. There’s also a serious, do-it-yourself fixin’s bar: onions, relish, jalapeños—the works.

Eddie says: “Perfectly grilled. Perfect roll. Top quality.”

Eddie could eat: Two, with mustard and relish—“if Judi [his wife] isn’t around.”

$3.99, Rte. 1 N., Saugus, 781-233-6399.

4. New England Hot Dog Company

A local joint that looks like a chain, thanks to its drab, generic tables.

The dog: Customers choose kosher, skinless, footlong, or all-beef and add any of 45 toppings, like Ipswich Ale mustard.

Eddie says: “They use real butter on their roll. But they microwave it. The only thing that should go in the microwave is popcorn. And maybe bacon.”

Eddie could eat: Three Provincetowns (a dog with mozzarella).

$1.95–$3.95, 1940 Revere Beach Pkwy., Everett, 617-394-9663.

5. Kelley’s Square Pub

Kelley’s is filled with fantastic pictures of owner and former local boxer John Mastrangelo’s glory days—and quite a few of Eddie himself.

The dog: A stubby frank cooked in pizza dough, a sort of pig-in-a-blanket on steroids. No condiments required.

Eddie says: “The dough gives the dog a great taste. It’s really unique.”

Eddie could eat: Eight. “But I gotta watch the Celtics while I’m doing it.”

$4.95 for two, 84 Bennington St., East Boston, 617-567-4627.

Halfway Café

A dimly lit hangout with Sox gear and a quality beer selection.

The dog: A full-pound all-beef monstrosity that’s bigger than your forearm. They have to custom order the roll to accommodate this beast, which comes with fries and toppings.

Eddie says: “See these slits? It allows the dog to cook in its own juices. It’s big enough—like a steak—that it can do that.”

Eddie could eat: A whole dog, with relish—maybe.

$8.99, 394 Main St., Watertown, 617-926-3595
